I'm a vegetarian/loser. When I did eat meat I preferred various types of 'seafood' including fish (dat salmon), lobster, etc.

I respect the moral decisions behind it. She feels that many animals are raised inhumanely at large "factory" farms and killed brutally at slaughterhouses. So, she doesn't eat meat. My thing is, though, I feel like trying to only eat meat that has been raised/killed humanely satisfies my moral requirements. That's what my blurb about buying meat directly from the farmer was about. If you don't mind me asking, what are your reasons for being vegetarian?

That's what my blurb about buying meat directly from the farmer was about. Generic moral reasons. A lot of it is the factory farm issue, but even if animals were killed humanely I would not eat meat, because I don't want anymore to die than what has to. There's also the environmental aspect (vegetable production is the lesser of two evils). I'm somewhat hypocritical because I'm still eating eggs and dairy. I can't drop those from my diet at the moment because that would destroy my health (my family's diet revolves around meat and it can already be difficult. When I move out and have a sustainable income I'll do this more properly). I'm not against products that don't kill or harm the animal in principle, so that's another reason why I haven't gone full vegan. I'm aware that most egg and dairy products are obviously related to meat industries, but I've also heard of, for example, smaller sheep farms that use the wool but properly raise them and don't kill them (I need to look into this more. In all honesty, there are certain aspects of this I still need to be more educated on, but at this point I'm not going to make a conscious decision to begin eating meat again because 'I'm not sure'). Furthermore, there are some animals that are so domesticated I don't know what to do with them other than continue to use their products but at the same time gradually reducing their population to a sustainable level at which we wouldn't have to kill so many. I've though about quitting just because of the constant ridicule. I am not vocal about it, but people inevitably find out, leading to stupid threats, constantly being called stupid, and claims of being 'anti-American' (especially in my extended family). I also find it to be somewhat anti-social because every time I go to a restaraunt or someone else's house I worry about whether or not there is something I can eat (there usually isn't anything interesting and I get a salad, leading to more ridicule /first world problems :p ). I won't quit though because that's some weak-willed shit right there.

I don't mean any offend anyone, but I'm just going to say that making choices about what you eat does not count as activism. Not that you guys are saying that, but some people come off that way. I eat organic, grass-fed type stuff when I can mostly because it tastes better and is better for you. I think what meat industries do can be pretty terrible, but if I felt really strongly about it I wouldn't bitch about peoples food choices, I would try to get the government to push regulations to ban these things. I don't do that, but thats because I'm lazy. I might in the future. /endrant
Chicken is my go to meat most of the time, but venison is also good. Elk is fucking delicious, and so is buffalo. I guess I'll answer chicken. I haven't had lamb in forever so I don't remember what it tastes like. Also I don't get how fish isn't meat. |
