When post-hardcore gets called hardcore enzymes in my brain start to denature. They're so different. And I generally hate one and all it stands for.

Going by my post in the Punk recommendation topic it's not gonna be Hardcore.

What post hardcore have you listened to?

It's an interesting point. I tell people I saw Trivium in concert, and most people say they don't know who that is. And here I thought everyone had at least heard of them.

I've felt the same about things too. The past couple of years my main music knowledge has come from two places: BBC 6music (a really good radio station that actually plays a pretty wide range of interesting and non-mainstream music) and the internet. Most of my metal knowledge comes from UG, because I don't listen to much metal myself so I just know it from it being mentioned there, as well as a few real life friends. Because I know about/of these bands, I guess I tend to assume other people do, because to me, they're not obscure at all. Very, very little music I listen to is obscure (or at least what I would consider obscure). Most if it you'd hear on something like 6music, or people here have heard of it, things like that. Sure, not much of it particularly 'mainstream', but there some stuff that isn't too far off. Some of it is very mainstream, within that genre. But then, to someone who doesn't really listen to music these bands might seem obscure because they've never heard of them. Several of my friends say I listen to 'weird' or 'obscure' music, which to me seems crazy because I know it isn't really - well, I think it isn't.
I think obscurity is relative, both to the group or person, but also to the genre/sub-genre. It also depends on what you're comparing to - so, if we take the umbrella term 'Metal' and say Metallica are 'mainstream' in the genre, something like Pelican would be relatively obscure. Of course, they're different sub-genres of metal, but you get the idea. If a band are big or iconic in that genre or sub-genre, then I wouldn't consider them 'obscure', even if a lot of people haven't heard of them. JoelCarli Wrote:Well curiosity killed the Maps. |
