Shrines are pretty cool to visit in Japan. i visited Mount Osore which is a volcanic mountain with tons of hot springs here and there.
According to Japanese mythology, it's the entrance to hell, so there's a blood pond that turns red (well it was sorta red in one spot whne I saw it), and the lake connects to the mythological Sanzu river that people ride to the afterlife (basically like Styx).
There's a ton of effigies up there to honor dead children.
Despite being a sacred area for Japanese mythology, the temple at the top is actually a buddhist temple because it's called a bodai-ji, which is a buddhist temple for revering the dead.
