Yeah, crucifixion is brutal.
The Romans were some of the most brutal torturers ever, and they didn't believe in certain criminals receiving a humane death. You know, even with all of that stuff in the article...it still doesn't quite describe how crucifixion must have been like. I mean...you read that stuff, and I went emotionally numb halfway through...

I still feel rather numb. And I feel sort of nauseous.
Yeah, obviously you couldn't describe the real experience. Thats just so intense, before I was just like, "Yeah, hanging from nails in your hands and having nails in your feet would hurt", but I never thought about the breathing thing. I think crucifixion just moved up to the top of the list of ways I don't want to die.
Seriously, how the feck does anyone come up with that?

The Romans were severely messed up.

Humans are severely messed up, even today...a time when torture is considered cruel and unusual.

I suspect the Romans didn't know how great of a toll crucifixion put on the body though, and they probably didn't care. We're talking about a society that had gladiator games here -- bloodsport for amusement of the masses. Of all the major historical empires, I think only Assyria rivals Rome for cruelty and sadism.
Well as it says in the article, they didn't invent it, they just "perfected" it. And it was only reserved for the worst of criminals, its not like something they did for fun. They intended for the people to suffer an unbelievable amount for the crimes they committed in order to deter people from doing the same.

No, I know. I'm just saying I don't think the Romans had any qualms about cruel punishments. And I can see their logic for using such harsh and cruel punishments on the worst of criminals. BUT I'm just saying, the Romans weren't very nice people in that area. (Of course, I suppose the idea of humane treatment of criminals is a modern idea.) That said, we as Western Civilization, owe a lot to the Romans.
Yeah, the romans did some terrible stuff, but during some periods if you were a roman citizen and you weren't breaking any laws, things weren't so bad compared to a lot of other civilizations in the past.
