Yeah, this. That's only because of UG that I know of them. I was pretty metal-ignorant before the internet.
To be honest I never mention how many fans a band has. I'd rather that the amount of fans a band has has absolutely no effect on whether someone likes the band I'm showing them.

Yeah, one of my friends has been a big fan of Fallout Boy before they got popular, and she was talking about she was "heartbroken" that all these other people who were massive fans instantly stopped listening to them once "Sugar We're Going Down" made them massive.
She was confused at how they were devoted fans and instantly dismissed them like that.
One of my friends instantly stops like something if he perceives it to be popular. I just don't see the point, nor do I have the energy to pretend to like/not like something purely to feel "underground" or whatever. He's a big music fan, but he just has weird ideas about "mainstream" and whatnot.
It's just that people don't seem to understand that the mainstream is shit because most people like shit, not because whatever's mainstean instantly becomes shit

I think some people also think it's cooler if they're the only person they know that likes something.
It's kinda shitty to be the only peron who likes a band or whatever though

Oh no, that's the worst for me. Most people I know either don't like the music I do, or just don't know it. And not even into particularly obscure stuff. I have maybe two friends who like what I do, but the rest I never talk about music with, because they're not that into music on the whole, or just dismiss and/or insult everything they haven't heard of. And whenever people ask what sort of music I like, I never know what to say, because people are just making conversation and aren't really interested a lot of the time.

Yeah, it's no fun if you have a favorite show that nobody knows about. It's more fun to quote a show and your friends get it.
Like this screenshot is meaningless to share with other people who haven't seen this show:
I get it, honestly. I don't stop liking things if they become mainstream, but I'm usually more comfortable when they aren't. It just bothers me hearing people talk about things I love when they don't actually know a thing about it. Like how I was complaining in the Breaking Bad thread recently about the hot popular girl raving about it. I dunno, it's cool that she enjoys it and stuff but she's not the type of person that would really appreciate all that goes on in it and really think about it like one should.
Basically I just like hearing from people that are really passionate and knowledgeable about the topic, such as close friends and people like you guys. The smaller the audience the closer the fans will be.
