Do you guys have any opinions on the current Hobbit movies? I enjoyed the latest one, but it was kinda ridiculous. One of my friends that the cartoonish violence would give people weird expectations if they watched the Hobbit movies before the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Well, the writers are taking a lot of liberties, honestly. They're not sticking to the book. That said, the plot is good, imho. And the acting is good. What is interesting is the presentation of some of the "backstory" of events leading up to the LotR, stuff like the Necromancer and such.
I don't think there is anything actually wrong with the stories in either, and U actually enjoyed both a lot. But I kinda hate how much CGI they use. Especially compared to The Lord of the Rings where so many people are just in kickass costumes. It makes the movie look like a video game during every action sequence.

It does look really different when everything is either CGI or a green screen instead of real stuff.
I mean, they aren't bad
I jsut really really love the LotR movies and the style they were in (and they still look fantastic 10 years later) so I don't like the over use of CGI as much. I guess it makes sense since The Hobbit is much more fantasy oriented and lighthearted, but whatever, to each his own.

This part confuses me. Can you reword it or something? My first thought was, "How more fantasy oriented can you get than LotR -- especially since they were written by the same guy and are even on the same continent?"

I just mean it's much more lighthearted. There isn't a war to win, it's just some dwarves taking back their home. And it was definitely written for a younger audience than TLotR, though it's not a children's book. So I think the big over-the-top and kind of silly action sequences make sense. I just don't think they look as nice as the grittiness of TLotR

Well...there is a war; it's just that the book is basically written from Bilbo's perspective. And Hobbits are naive at best, so they tend not to see the bigger picture in regards to Middle-Earth conflicts.
Plus, the movies do tend to bring in the stuff that Gandalf and the Elves were up to, which is something that's only alluded to in the LotR books; so, I like that.
Well the Necromancer is actually mentioned in the Hobbit. Yeah, the Hobbit was more lighthearted and aimed at a younger audience (and fun fact, an editors son read the book and told his Dad it was good, so thats how it got published. The kid was 5.), but LOTR was really epic and serious, and these just seems like a kung-fu movie at some point.
Also I forgot to mention, but the stuff they changed in the second part bothered me less than what they changed in the first one. I was really mad about all the Azog nonsense, and the fact that Saruman and Galadriel showed up. Also they kinda fucked up Frodo's character development, he was too bold already in the first one, and even in the second one he was being more bold than he was clever, which was not so in the books.
In case I haven't mentioned, I'm a hardcore Tolkien fan.
