My pops enjoys dismissing everything as liberal and whatnot.

I just ignore him because he has an incredibly one-sided opinion and refuses to be open to debate.

It's weird because since I grew up in a really conservative family I can still make myself think that semi-extremist right-wing views are the best. Sometimes a part of me still says 'fuck the French, raise military spending, end welfare, racism isn't real'. Some things just never go away even if I don't really believe those things anymore. :/
Sometimes it's nicer to be around some conservatives. Sure they can be ignorant about stuff, but then there's times where they have more sense than liberals, especially college liberals.

Well yeah but the people in my family aren't really normal conservatives (who I have no qualms with even if I disagree with them). Outside of the internet and maybe six IRL people I'm always surrounded by conservatives. My family are starting to become more like reactionary extremists though.

Their version of America is basically the Soviet Union minus any public services plus multinationals. Obviously they don't see it as anything near the Soviet Union. I kind of want to write a satire novel on this now. :p

Anyway what I'm saying is I often get this utopian vision of a conservative world in the back of my head because that's how I was brought up and it's what I constantly hear. I occasionally have to have debates with myself to understand why none of that is a good idea.

Yes.

Very yes.

Definitely very yes.

My dad's conservative (I'm not very opinionated... maybe strike me as a centrist to accompany my agnosticism), but not the dumb or jerk kind and it always seems more refreshing to talk to him than to the average Joe. Maybe because I'm his son, but I genuinely think he's a really smart guy. Engineer who knows everything there is to know about science, theology and religion. Heck, the only thing I can think of that I disagree with him on is gay marriage and he manages not to come off as pretentious when talking about it. He even has some really good points, and not once does he pull out the Bible to justify his opinion on the matter. Obviously nothing wrong with the Bible in itself, but as we all know, conservatives tend to pull out the Bible when debating social issues, giving both their political alignment and religion a bad name.

Y'all are cool too (like, an internet community this peaceful when debating? One in a million), although I take it you're all generally more liberal.

College liberals are generally the worst though. They're the ones who make the internet loud.

Respectful, civil, in-person religious debates between religious and secular folk > The music of Charlie Parker > Didgeridoos ....... The coffee is the same as usual, but you like it that way > A song you never were particularly fond of but nonetheless didn't dislike comes on the radio for the first time in years > Quarter in sofa crack ....... Hemorrhoids > Tapeworms > Alien parasites > Stepping on a Lego ....... People who take Ayn Rand that seriously > Internet Atheism > Pretentious college liberals and libertarians
Less voters = less people voting against republicans
More voters = more people voting against republicans

Statistics. This is why voter ID laws exist. Because voter fraud is not a real thing.

I bow down to your immaculate reasoning.
So, Syria.

We've all talked about this before and obviously most of us have been following what's been going on. I am wondering if someone can fully explain the Al Qaeda situation?

I basically know what their involvement is. How could I not after paying attention to this and hearing about it for so long? I get annoyed with the 'you do know it's Al Qaeda, right?' rant. I know. :p My question is, are people overestimating their influence. I am by no means defending the 'opposition' who, if successful, will commit their own crimes and not transition smoothly, nor am I denying that there is extremist involvement. I feel like people are exagerrating though; they talk as if Al Qaeda (and other extremist groups involved) is the rebellion, while I've seen it as more as the 'official opposition' has a 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' mentality regarding the extremist groups. I won't pretend to be an expert on all of the different sections of the rebellion. My question, just how involved are they?

This was inspired by a 'Obama is taking guns from Americans and giving them to Al Qaeda' facebook post.
