It's not completely a dud, my boyfriend is busy with his second thesis on Anarchism as an possible ideology. Just like any other ideology it has some good elements and bad ones. The biggst thing is that everyone has this idea that anarchism = chaos, but it's actually just a system with no central government. If you take Anarchism as a political ideology.

I know that anarchism =/= chaos, but I don't see how no authority could be 1) possible, and 2) good.

I know anarchists believe that crime exists because of faulty governments and that we'd alleviate a lot of it if the government didn't exist, but then who'd take care of the crime that is left?

Plus there's the whole Darwinism aspect of it. The strongest member of society will become the leader of it.

It's not that their won't be ANY governance, just not a central government. It boils down to a zero sum game, everybody keeps everyone in check when the power is distributed evenly. Police and other securities will be privatised.

One of the main reasons why it won't work in our current society is because people are power hungry. Even if you start from scratch and everyone is equal, eventually someone will want to be more and that will then build up again to some sort of goverment.

Prime example if where anarchism worked was in Africa, the tribes sorted each other out. It was only when the Europeans came and brought over thier systems that things started to go south politically. But the europeans arriving had other advantages.
Yeah, I mean maybe theres a different version of Anarchy that I'm not aware of, but the typical "We'll have no government at all and it will still be cool" is a no go. Every time in history when there has been no significant government in an area, warlords have risen up, fought wars for power spanning multiple generations, and eventually someone has killed enough of everyone else that they can call themselves King. That doesn't sound preferable to me.

Adam, did they let you drop out, or did you just stop going to school? I realize a lot of things are different over there, we have compulsory education here, but if your parents sign some stuff you can drop out at 16 or 17, or you can sign the forms yourself to drop out at 18. I don't understand how they expect you to go back to school though, seeing as there isn't a semester that starts in the next four months, except summer school I guess.

Edit: And debbs, I'm sure you know what you're talking about, but I'm also pretty sure the tribes in Africa still had tribal wars fairly often, which is not better than what we're doing now.
I think they just want him enrolled at least.
