Just take a look at the comments on a Youtube video of one of my 80's bands ("today's music is crap, I'm 15 and listen to REAL MUSIC! Dokken RULEZ \m/" or "you can't spell CRAP without RAP").

Yeah, I agree that a ton of subcultures are pretty dumb, like when I rage about the anime fandom. I too cringe at any music video that came out before 2000 and seeing comments like "I'm 13 and I listen to REAL MUSIC" or "this was when music was GOOD, we didn't have anybody like Justin Beiber (or whoever is currently the most hated pop artist). It's like they don't realize that shitty teen pop always existed.

The situation with Post-Punk and Alternative were a bit different, as Post-Punk was always kind of identified as different, whereas a lot of early Alternative bands used to actually be traditional Hardcore Punk bands, but after trying to expand their sound, they started getting harassed and exiled by the scene that gave them their start.
It's funny thinking that was controversial for 80's Hardcore because it wasn't tr00 Punx, but like Sam mentioned earlier with the metal community, it's now considered really influential for the punk scene, despite being criticized decades earlier.
