I love punk music and all the subgenres around it, but the culture is so fucking dumb. I think it's funny that people get so into one music scene like that.

The culture is kind of dumb. It's fun reading stuff from people who were around the punk scene in the 80's and seeing how they were really close minded about shit. Like Henry Rollins said that he saw during some Black Flag shows where some skinny guy with classes was just there to watch them perform, and people were beating his ass because he wasn't punk.
Also it was how Alternative got started, because it was punk bands rebelling against the punk scene. Reading things from Husker Du, The Replacements, and even Soundgarden were talking about people were bitching at them for their songs being "too long" or "hey that's a guitar solo NO SOLOS", or "you're not singing about being a rebel!" It's kind of sad that in some cases, this still holds true.

Yea, it's pretty interesting to read about. I just think some people take it too far. Guess I'm not just really invested in the message of the music very much at all. I just like how it sounds and the energy behind it.

Some people do kind of take being in a scene a little too far, especially when making rules to make things more exclusive.

As an example from Metal, the band Emperor got so sick of the attitude within the Black Metal community that their final album was basically a "fuck you!" to all the Black Metal elitists. (It had Black Metal through and through, but there were enough outside influences to piss the elitists off.) Then, they disbanded. I mean, I love Metal, but the elitists are always the guys bitching about how "that's not metal" -- even when it has all key elements of metal. The elitists even go so far as call Metal "today's classical music" and Jazz is apparently "failed classical music". Any type of variation from the basic forms is generally derided. The funny thing is, 5 years down the line, the same bands that were "not Metal enough" are now being praised as innovative by the elitist crowd.

I didn't say anything about punk being the only subculture that did that.

Sam, I want to understand your definiton of mohawk and fauxhawk.
And yeah, I'm not really a fan of punk music, though I like a lot of the things influenced by punk. And metal culture is what ultimately drove me away from metal music and into more mellow stuff, though I'm regaining my taste a little.

This is a mohawk without the sides shaved: This is similar to the haircut I had in middle school, except I pulled the 'hawk part back more, so it was sticking straight up. Also, I was a dirty blonde back then. No bullshit dye. Quote:And yeah, I'm not really a fan of punk music, though I like a lot of the things influenced by punk.
