Hey, that'd be a nice place to ask this girl I've been talking to if she'd like to go with me.
Maybe, idk. I know she likes cartoons, but I don't know how she'd feel about looking at comics, manga and anime with me.

It could be a way to introduce her to the hobby. Taking her to a store isn't as overwhelming than taking her to an anime convention.

I was gonna joke about buying her the monogatari series and seeing if she's worthy but it's too expensive to even laughabout

Dude, fuck Aniplex. Like mom-and-pop stores charge borderline highway robbery, but Aniplex is highway robbery. I don't want to spend almost 200 fucking dollars for all 15 episodes of Bakemonogatari on 8 blurays and only available as a "limited edition" box set. Like fuck, is that their justification? "well it's an 8 disc set". It's not "limited edition" if it's the only edition.
I looked up Oreimo awhile back, the DVD of season one is $44, while that's a tad bit pricey, it's not unusual. Hell even Funimation sells brand new releases at that price or slightly more depending on the show. Well then the Bluray version comes out at $278 (formerly $329). Also they charge $70 for four episodes on bluray. It's like they're stuck in 2007 for bluray prices.

It's like you're speaking to my soul, I agree completely. Though I believe the thing with aniplex is that they just convert the Japanese prices to $ which is how we end up with super inflated prices, as apposed to something that we're more accustomed too.
Like how when the 3rd Madoka movie came out the bluray prices were a direct conversion of their japan prices, and they're media is too expensive. almost $60 for a movie like why pls

Well it's a tad bit cheaper than the Japanese prices, they pay even more in Japan.
Well the only "pro" to Aniplex is that some of their releases are the same as the Japanese release (and Aniplex is a Japanese company), so the DVD/Bluray box is the same that you get in Japan, as they tend to release seasons in multiple volumes. The problem I see is that only super-hardcore fans give a shit that vol 1 of Nisekoi is exactly the same sans subtitles. What Aniplex doesn't realize, is that they're not selling to a Japanese market, they're selling to the American market where $70 for 4 episodes doesn't cut it, especially when pretty much all of your competition gives you a fuckton more content than that for the same price. If I'm spending $70, that better be at minimum 12 episodes on Bluray not 4. That's what got Bandai in trouble with their anime market. Even though they didn't charge as much as Aniplex, they got kind of close with the DVD releases. They blamed their lackluster sales on piracy, not the fact that they charged $40 for 4 episodes.

Nevermind, rightstuf has them for $30-$40, but that still alot for a movie
And yea, they don't seem to realize that, but they also seem to get a lot of the more popular series and people are willing to pay for them so they're not gonna stop. Like Madoka, Monogatari, ect (both of which are some of the best selling anime ever)

It's an interesting marketing ploy. Charging those prices and only having the super hardcore fans with highly expendable paychecks, they're probably making the same amount of money as they would with the amount of casual fans buying it.
If you think about it, excluding their ownership of SAO, as popular as Monogatari and Madoka Magica are, they're still a more niche fanbase in the US than SAO or a lot of stuff Sentai and Funimation sells. It's just a dick move for the niche target. |
