The interesting thing about Shaft besides their cinematography, is that the main director Akiyuki Shinbo kind of pulls a Kevin Smith and recycle a lot of the cast members, as a lot of the main actors are in several of his shows.

I really need to just start watching a Shaft show. Every time you post about a new Shaft show, I go, "Wtf?!". I really should just watch one, to see if I can "get it". lol

Their two most popular series are Madoka Magica, and the Monogatari series.
Madoka Magica is heavily influenced by the story of Faust, and use that to deconstruct the magical girl genre. So it starts off looking like a typical cutesy magical girl show, but after the third episode it gets into some really tragic shit, and it goes downward. Premise: The Monogatari series is what got me into Shaft. It's an occult series mixed with some romantic comedy bits. The first season is Bakemonogatari, but prepare to be confused on the story, as it's one of those where it starts after a lot of shit has happened, and over the course of the first season, they slowly reveal what happened beforehand. Madoka Magica storywise and dialogwise isn't super Shafty, it's just the animation style, especially during the witch fights. It's also one of their very few shows that are anime original. Monogatari is all out Shaft.
Here's what I'm talking about with the animation in Madoka Magica: Well there's no subs, but it's a fight scene.
