Yeah, our TA made a joke about that actually. But no one has ever figured it out. And if electrons are flowing in one direction into a wire that isn't plugged into anything you would get a build up of negative charge, which would either have to go back the way it came, or arc to somewhere else (which is how lightning works), no arcing occurred, but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work with both wires if the electrons were going back and forth.
Magnetic field lines are out because they don't induce a current on unless they are changing (or the wire is moving, but thats actually the same). If the earths magnetic field is changing we have bigger problems on our hands.
The signal from my body was different. It was definitely picking up our signal generator because the frequency and amplitude were changing as we changed them on the signal generator.
