It's an interesting marketing ploy. Charging those prices and only having the super hardcore fans with highly expendable paychecks, they're probably making the same amount of money as they would with the amount of casual fans buying it.
If you think about it, excluding their ownership of SAO, as popular as Monogatari and Madoka Magica are, they're still a more niche fanbase in the US than SAO or a lot of stuff Sentai and Funimation sells. It's just a dick move for the niche target.
