Madoka Magica is heavily influenced by the story of Faust, and use that to deconstruct the magical girl genre. So it starts off looking like a typical cutesy magical girl show, but after the third episode it gets into some really tragic shit, and it goes downward.

The Monogatari series is what got me into Shaft. It's an occult series mixed with some romantic comedy bits. The first season is Bakemonogatari, but prepare to be confused on the story, as it's one of those where it starts after a lot of shit has happened, and over the course of the first season, they slowly reveal what happened beforehand.
