It got a lot of backlash as people were expecting Death Note 2.0 (let's also include Death Note's backlash), as the story isn't exactly deep and it's pretty straightforward. It's two guys trying to make it big in Shonen Jump and make an anime, and doesn't really strive for more than that. The only other aspect they use in the series is the author and the artist's ideologies on how the shonen manga industry should work. Though I personally don't see anything wrong with that, as I think you can still make a good series without making it all "deep and speshul".
I do like how the anime expands on everything without adding too much.
