I thought it was kind of exciting but there was no depth. Action was basically "I swing my sword, screen flashes and you die" and relationships were "I just met you and this is crazy but....". Only thing I found boring not due to a lack of depth by the creators is that he doesn't have to train or anything. He just downloads skills basically. That people keep calling Kirito a badass and him being called The Black Swordsman (which is of course the nickname of Gatsu from Berserk who I'd say is genuinely a badass since he's brave and trains hard) when he's just downloading skills annoyed me.
Did SAO get pre-release hyped much? I don't get how that works. Like Kill La Kill got hyped up before it came out and it was known it would be a really popular seasonal anime (on MAL there was a game I didn't play for which you choose which multiple anime you think will get the most viewers and the person who chooses the anime which get the most MAL viewers wins. Kill La Kill along with a few other completely new anime, sequels of really popular seasonal anime and some popular long-running anime was banned because it was guaranteed to be popular). How could anyone know that?
