@Phils: That's interesting to hear. You are correct in your response to number three. Most people don't have that kind of money, and have to receive financial aid/scholarships/ take out a loan. I am rich and could just get a full ride from my parents, but that just feels wrong. Which is why I want to work through it- I need to go through what the average person goes through, and this is the closest thing I can do.
I just discussed this with my parents and they are livid. They do not understand my reasoning and think I should just take the full ride. I still disagree though, since I care more about becoming an independent adult and maintaining my integrity than I do anything else. I don't think anyone would ever respect me if they found out I just got handed everything, and I certainly would never be able to respect myself. I also just see it as smarter and more cost-effective to start there when I don't even know what I want yet. The reason my parents are so offended is that they want me to have the 'college party experience' and I just can't justify spending all their money for me to go party in some dorms.
