RE: Community Thread - WCPhils - 07-24-2013 Naw man, Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit is a classic And I do like Brand New but prefer the more pop-punk stuff like Your Favorite Weapon. Deja Entendu is pretty good though RE: Community Thread - Grungie - 07-24-2013 (07-24-2013, 04:54 PM)WCPhils Wrote: on emo. It seems like everything gets an emo label. Obviously they're not all correct, but I've seen everything from Snowing and American Football, to Senses Fail, to My Chemical Romance and to Brand New get the label. It's all over the place. I just figured a lot of pop-punkish bands in the mid 2000's were just getting slapped with the emo label just for the hell of it. Basically if they had someone in the band with black hair and guyliner, they were called emo. Though I still never understood why Coheed was considered emo, even though I think they used to be pop-punk when they first came out. Blues - A pretty strict genre. Jazz - Largely less strict, but somewhat strict nonetheless. Grunge, Glam rock, Pop rock, etc. - Very loose, bands sound similar within a movement or genre, but quite different at the same time. Metal, Punk - Elitists, elitists everywhere! (or, without elitists, Indie and Prog rock) Then there are other cases, such as individual artists. Beethoven: Classical, or Romantic? Might as well just start calling Hendrix emo while we're at it, guys! (07-24-2013, 05:02 PM)JoelCarli Wrote: Metal, Punk - Elitists, elitists everywhere!I think part of the reason people in Metal and Punk get labeled as "elitist" is three-fold. 1) We tend to be very genre specific. The reason for this is that people have been experimenting with Metal and Punk since the late '70s. There's so many bands out there, and we like to know what something sounds like before we listen, and we differentiate between (for instance) what's Metal and what's Punk (because the two take a lot of influence from each other). I know this bugs some people (like Grungie), but it's pretty much something that makes sense to most Metalheads and Punks. It works for us, and we don't try to say anyone else should do it. hrug: 2) There's certain people in Metal and Punk who only think you should listen to X list of bands. (I'm more familiar with the Metal side of that, of course, but I know it exists on the Punk side as well, especially when you get into Hardcore. Anyway, gonna talk on the Metal side...) For example, a lot of people in Metal follow the teachings of a group called ANUS, who basically have tried to rewrite the entire history of Metal to say that it supports Nihilism. Utter bullshit! Not all Metal artists continue Metal solely to continue Nihilistic philosophy, though some do. Another (in)famous quote is certain Metal elitists believe Jazz is "failed classical music". These types uphold classical as the pinnacle and say that Metal should conform to certain forms that similar to classical music. They even refuse to listen to certain genres because they think they aren't close enough to these arbitrary forms. They tend to spend more time evaluating the scores of music than actually listening to the music, some of them. There are other examples, of course, but you get the point. On the whole, I've found most Metalheads think those types of things are bullshit and just want to listen to some good Metal. I don't really have any examples from the Punk side though... 3) There's always the immature kid who bashed all that isn't either Metal or Punk. (Never both, of course.) Generally, guys like me just roll our eyes and say, "Look, if I want to listen to Pearl Jam, Daft Punk, Bach, The Offspring, [you get the point] as well as a ton of Metal/Punk bands...then why do you care?". These kids tend to pretty far and few between, but they tend to come off similar to how Ian the fox comes off unfortunately. Chopin is the KING of emo though. Emo a guy complaining about how his life sucks, maybe wears flannel? Grunge RE: Community Thread - crazysam23 - 07-24-2013 (07-24-2013, 05:14 PM)Grungie Wrote:Well, I know. I mean, God Forbid they actually tag them as a genre which mostly fits their current musical characteristics, right? As an aside, Claudio looks weird with snakebites. RE: Community Thread - BobSacamano - 07-24-2013 I never hear any of these bands you guys are talking about being called emo. I think the problem is though that it's been confused with what the current emo image is and what those people listen to. Most people don't realize it was originally a genre. But anyways, I really like emo, but only the larger bands in the genre. I find the really underground stuff to sound exactly the same as each other and every one I've heard I found really boring. But there's a lot of diversity in the larger bands and I love those. And about TTNG and American Football sounding the same, you just gotta listen to the songs more I think. I thought the same about AF but I came to love all of the songs individually. I really don't think it's all that emotional of an album though, just a really pretty one. I can totally see complaining about the diversity in TTNG's Animals, but their newest one really split away from that and there's a lot of experimentation and diversity there. I love all their stuff though apart from the first EPs being okay. |
