RE: Community Thread - carlcockatoo - 06-08-2013 (06-08-2013, 12:09 AM)WCPhils Wrote: Yea, I was exaggerating with the percentage thing. What I meant is what you said basically. Even if someone was the equivalent of Middle Class in the US it is still a really violent place to live from what I've heard. Actually, everything I hear about Brazil seems to be true of India as well. An economy that is quickly growing but so so so so much poverty and violence Yeah, but India is different. To my understanding, the poor in India are worse off than the poor in Brazil while the wealthier tend to be better off. But, according to the GINI coefficient statistics, India has a smaller divide to begin with, which probably has to do with the rapidly expanding middle class (over 300 million by this point, which still isn't too good considering there are over a billion people), while in Brazil I imagine there's less of a middle class, but more of a US middle class equivalent 'upper class'. I'm not sure if that even makes sense. :p The general concept applies to lots of places though, including India, most of Latin America, South Africa (if I'm wrong feel free to tell me how dumb I am Debbie), the Philippines, etc. (06-08-2013, 12:13 AM)Adam Wrote: There are a lot of white people here... I get that, and I am aware modern Israel is mostly people descended from the Europeans coming to the area during the mass migration that occurred after WWII. My earlier post was mocking people who think Israel is a place full of brown people (although I'm aware that 20% of Israel proper is Arab, and there are immigrants from numerous predominately non-white places, Ethiopia being a notable place, so I know it's not all European-stlye white people either). RE: Community Thread - Adam - 06-08-2013 Well for Americans, if you wanna know what's Israel like it's basically the U.S. with less fat people but instead of english it sounds like everyone are coughing Makes sense? RE: Community Thread - AliR - 06-08-2013 Yeah, I'm still settled on Canada, mostly cuz you guys give out visas like they're Christmas presents and other than seal clubbing and no great beaches I can't think of a bad thing to say about the place. I'm also really interested in francophonie cultures tbf. Quebec, Paris, Burkina, Switzerland (???), Cote d'Ivoire and so on. Though Brazil has a pretty fucked up class system from what I've heard. This is an interesting book on the subject http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003EV5PNY/ref=oh_d__o01_details_o01__i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 RE: Community Thread - carlcockatoo - 06-08-2013 (06-08-2013, 12:14 AM)WCPhils Wrote: We can't help it. Most people get their international news from the 'Your World News in a Minute' segments on televised news which only focus on bad things (unless you count the American coverage of the royal wedding as a 'good thing'). If there was no internet I would be so misinformed on anything that happens outside the US. RE: Community Thread - WCPhils - 06-08-2013 (06-08-2013, 12:19 AM)carlcockatoo Wrote:Basically. Interesting sounding book, I'll have to give that a read. Do you mean the official class systems or de facto class divides? Because I don't really know about India, but in China for example, the class system (forgot what it's called I feel so ignorant right now) still exists in theory but is non-existent in practice (except some mostly rural provinces which are still enforcing it and is quite tragic). I watched an Al-Jazeera documentary about people living 'illegally' in Beijing and how most people who do it aren't sent back. I know Shanghai officially abolished it. I don't meant to switch to China but since I'm already going, while there is a significant urban poverty situation, it does suck that China's middle class is mostly in the cities while most of the poverty is in rural areas. The farmland itself is overpopulated, so each person does not have enough land to grow profitable crops so there just isn't anything they can do and many live in subsidence. In some provinces where the class system is still enforced this is a significant issue as China has an urbanisation policy meant to help (which is a whole other issue in itself for another time) but isn't helping many rural families. (06-08-2013, 12:27 AM)AliR Wrote: I'm thankful for the internet and globalization. Me too, although there are some aspects of globalisation I am not happy about. RE: Community Thread - AliR - 06-08-2013 I'm not too well-informed on globalism but I think cultural erasure is what most complain about. I don't really mind that, I've never had a strong connection to any culture or so. I think that's my favorite part of living as an expat in such multicultural places, I've never become attached to a people, a land, a flag, an ideal etc and so I tend to view that as irrational. I think culture and such should always be documented and kept alive, but that doesn't mean that we should reverse the way that the world seems to be gravitating. |
