RE: Anime/Manga Thread - Grungie - 09-02-2013 Me and Hank discussed this earlier, we don't know why the hell those two fell in love with each other. It pushed the story along. Yeah, love stories are cheesy, but if it moves the story...who cares? hrug: RE: Anime/Manga Thread - Grungie - 09-02-2013 Well their romance was supposed to be a big deal, especially since it's the motivation for the second half of the show. So for a series with a big focus on the how much the main characters who are bonded by their love, you'd think there would be more depth and motivation to the romance instead of just "BAM they love each other and would die for each other". Imo the show would seem like something that would have a bit more depth than just moving stuff along just for the sake of making it less mundane. I should probably read the light novels because the anime feels really half-assed, cuz there's a bunch of episodes where it ended and I thought "wait, that's it?" and they don't continue with that mini story anymore. From what I can tell, SAO focuses mainly on specific events. So, we're not seeing them developing into a big deal until the episode where they realize they love each other and want to get married. Then, although their relationship adds a dynamic to the show, there's still the fact that they're caught up in SAO itself. I feel like the show does a good job of making the emotions of the moment key to how Kirito and Asuna feel during events. At least, that's how I view it, having seen the 1st half of the show. It seems to take a very "less is more" approach, I guess. I don't really mind. I feel like the show does a good job of making the emotions of the moment key to how Kirito and Asuna feel during events. At least, that's how I view it, having seen the 1st half of the show. I saw your deleted section about the twilight/disney thing, but I feel that this show was more of the disney romance than you're saying my expectations were. You'll soon see in the second half about how strongly he feels about his love and it's the main motivation for the second half. So for me, seeing how their relationship is motivation for the entire second half, and rethinking back to the beginning of their relationship and how it didn't have much depth just kind of takes the emotion out of it for me if they're supposed to be all emotional for each other. Since their romance for each other is supposed to be a big chunk of the story, it would make a lot more sense to add some depth to their relationship instead of as just something to make the episodes go by, since everything before that was just him wandering around, hanging out with random people. It wasn't like Goku's relationship with Chi-Chi because the point of DBZ was Goku kicking people's asses, and Chi-Chi was really just a side character. Imagine if Chi-Chi was the second main character and their romance was a big aspect of the show, but had the same depth as before, you'll probably think "why are they in love with each other?" SAO's point was originally about how Kirito wants to beat the game to get out, and then became how he and Asuna are so in love with each other, that they want to beat the game so they could be together in real life. So while the show did excel in in portraying how people either got wound up in the game and it became a reality for them, or how people accepted their fate in the game, but when the show began to delve more into the Kirito X Asuna relationship, it just kind of made me feel like she was more of his partner rather than his lover. At least in Accel World, Haru and Kuroyukihime's relationship had some depth to it as it was also part of the story. Haru had his motivation for why he wants to fight for her, and she had hers, though moreso for Haru. SAO didn't really feel like it had the same dynamic relationship as Accel World despite their relationship is supposed to be stronger than Haru X Kuroyukihime. tl;dr their romance is a big chunk of the story, but it just felt slapped together RE: Anime/Manga Thread - crazysam23 - 09-02-2013 Eh, true. I'll give you that. Though, to be honest, there's times in reality where relationships just sort of fall together. The fact that my fiancee and I kind of started off dating in an odd way sort of makes it so I don't really see an issue with how Kirito and Asuna came together. That said, my thoughts on the matter may change as I progress through the show. Btw, any idea when the 2nd season is supposed to come out? RE: Anime/Manga Thread - Grungie - 09-02-2013 But I'm sure your relationship later built up and didn't jump straight from some girl you hung out with a lot to "zomg we're starcrossed lovers and we have to get married to stay together 5ever and I'll risk my life for you" almost instantaneous. If they were just partners, I wouldn't really be butthurt over their lack of depth, but since they jumped from partner to the extreme without much explanation, it was like a fanfic shipping scenario, especially the premise for the second arc. Also idk when the second season is coming out as I mentioned how Japanese TV works. It might never get a second season, which is very common RE: Anime/Manga Thread - Hank Hill - 09-02-2013 I dunno. Like grungie, I just think it was pretty spontaneous is all. I was pretty surprised once it happened. I guess I was alright with it afterwards, but a heads up wouldn't have hurt. But then again, who could resist Sandwich-kun? I mean we'd been friends for a while, but my emotions did kind of go from good friend to "I love you" within the space of 2 weeks -- as corny as that sounds. Honestly, it's a good thing she had feelings for me first, or she'd probably have been creeped out. As it was, she was in shock for a couple hours after I told her that I had feelings for her. We both laugh now, but that next day we had like the oddest conversation we ever had. lol. I guess I'm saying is that it's not completely non-viable for Kirito to develop feelings for her quickly. And I suspect the strength of his feelings now had a lot to do with them spending months "married". Also, keep in mind, they're both teenagers; teenagers have no idea how to wait when it comes to feelings, lol. Quote:If they were just partners, I wouldn't really be butthurt over their lack of depth, but since they jumped from partner to the extreme without much explanation, it was like a fanfic shipping scenario, especially the premise for the second arc.Well, I think there were flashes of how she felt things for him for awhile, which is why I suspect she didn't get along with him in several previous episodes. His feelings were very abrupt, I admit. It's not like they'd never worked together before; it's just that I think they saw each other more as colleagues before they got together.
