RE: The Venting/Ranting/Hugging Thread! - Grungie - 02-28-2016

So there's this guy at work that's kind of annoying me lately. Sometimes he's fine, but other times he annoys the hell out of me. Seems like recently I can't stand being around him for more than an hour.

One reason I get annoyed "talking" to him, is that he's basically a one way conversation, so you hear him lecturing about some random ass topic that gets off on several different long tangents with sub-tangents that magically all tie in together. How those come out, is that he'll talk about something, then mention something you don't know about, then spend about 10 mins explaining that, then go off on another tangent and somehow get back on track.

He's good to talk to when you find something really stupid, goofy or off the wall on the internet (or anything in general), because he appreciates that stuff, but because that's pretty much all he cares about, he has some odd perception of the world. It's basically like his opinion on hobbies or anything is based off of 4chan unless he knew about it beforehand (ie comicbook universes or Star Wars). So when I talk about things, he'll mention some off the wall shit, to where he's completely misguided and misunderstanding basically anything I'm talking about. He's also obsessed with finding really off the wall or fucked up movies, games and anime (like his obsession with The Room). That also blurs his perception of pretty much anything.

Since I'm one of the only people at work who listens to non-mainstream music, watch anime not popular with people off the internet, or have an obsession with JRPG's, he'll make hipster jokes. While that in and of itself is all fine and dandy, it's when he starts spouting stupid shit from his blurred 4chan version of everything. So he thinks anything not in the mainstream light is all try-hard and edgy because he thinks it's all about rape, murder, torture or some other bullshit. He actually told me "well I tried listening to underground music and it's all tryhard and they think they're edgy with singing about rape and murder". It's almost like he thinks all underground music is gore-grind or porno-grind.

So when I mention I'm digging anything, I can't tell if he's actually trying to be a dick, or if he's an idiot based on his remarks. The other day I got a text from him asking if I wanted to get dinner with him, and I responded back "nah sorry, I ate already", and he then responds with "okay, enjoy your waifu time". Like wtf is that supposed to mean? So on Friday, he asked me out for dinner, and this time I said sure. Then when I got in his car, he said "so how was your waifu time the other day?". I say "wtf are you talking about?" "oh, well I know that's a required concept of anime fans right?" I tell him "are you retarded?" "no no no, that's a real thing that every anime fan does". I can't tell if he's fucking with me or he really believes this shit.

Me and this other guy are avid anime fans, so we thought that because this guy likes anime, he'll be interested in some recommendations, so we recommend stuff we think is good. He"ll then go watch it, then come back and respond with "when does it get good?" or "I watched My Neighbor Totoro and nothing happened in the movie". Or miss the point of the movie/show and find something random to make a complaint over. We introduced him to Mamoru Hosada who's people claim is almost on Ghibli level of film quality, and he'll say "well all he cares about is making waifu characters". We ask what he means by that, and he says "well the movies are just waifu bait and I can't see anyone actually enjoying the story". He made that same remark when I tried watching the movie Summer Wars with him, and I couldn't stand an hour of the movie with him, because he'll make remarks every 5 mins of the movie, then lecture for minutes at a time and miss the movie, because he just has to make a lecture over the random 3 second scene about kids playing a DS in a bus. I was with him on Friday and got 5 mins into A Girl Who Leapt Through Time when he was already going "oh look, it's another one of his waifu characters" "oh of course they have to play baseball", "wow, cicadas? Really?". I got to the "fuck this, we're not watching this, and switched to something else.

I can't tell if he spends too much time on 4chan or the goofy parts of Reddit and Tumblr to where he has an obnoxious view of everything or if he's actually trying to be a dick about everything. Regardless it's really annoying when you try to share your favorite movie to someone and they not only have to talk through the entire movie, but make remarks about random shit every 5 mins. Though if you show him something stupid or really goofy, he'll quietly and intently watch it. It's like you can only really share stupid shit with this guy.

Sounds like a toolbag. Of course, he may just be really dumb and not understand the way stereotypes work..

That also sounds right

Yesterday he was talking more about waifu bait to me and the fellow anime fan, and his description is really a long winded way of saying that he hates when female characters are attractive without directly saying it. Maybe he's misogynistic or something if he saw an acclaimed movie like Summer Wars and that's all he got out of the movie was "baw they made the main character's love interest attractive".

Something I always hate seeing, is when you see a "worst " and people spout off whatever's really popular as being the most terrible thing. I'm pretty sure that the majority of those people are doing it because they think they're rebellious or just don't know anything outside of their mainstream bubble.

Seeing people mention Games like Call of Duty or Skyrim as the worst games ever have not seen games that are truly an atrocity to mankind. Design the Skyline or worse have done more damage to people's ears than Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift.

Yep. Though like you say, I think a large part of it has to do with trying to look cool (which is, needless to say, in and of itself, pretty much diametrically opposite to cool).

My own personal major beef with contemporary popular (top 40) music is that virtually none of it is even remotely interesting (musically, but even lyrically, if we consider that) or original, god forbid innovative or daring (plus, the typical "beat"/drum sounds every goddamn song has plus the necessary rapped verses make me want to gouge my eardrums out).

I don't get the feeling any of these artists "try" or particularly care about general arts and culture. Taylor Swift (from what I've heard) is actually a pretty decent songwriter, but as long as I have access to recordings of Beethoven (or, say, the Police), it's pretty darn clear there's a good chance I won't get up one morning thinking "hmm, I sure could use a good dose of young-girl/woman-whining-about-her-seventy-twelve-ex-boyfriends-over-the-same-four-chords-for-three-and-a-half-minutes-without-any-guitar-solos" (though it does occasionally happen that I want to listen to more simplistic music).

That said, pop music and creating a good hook are incredibly difficult forms of art. They are the most difficult thing I have ever tried to compose, and I've composed string quartets, pieces for orchestra, entire jazz band pieces, jazz fusion, video game and film music as well as world music, among many other styles. So, I always admire popular artists when a song of theirs comes out and it doesn't completely suck and has a creative and memorable hook, which I have observed to be the case with, as you've mentioned, Taylor Swift, but also others like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. Justin Bieber also has memorable hooks, but his songs and his singing are still annoying. But yes, there are considerably worse artists out there.

I just think the whole point of pop music is to be catchy

RE: The Venting/Ranting/Hugging Thread! - JCizzle - 03-16-2016

I'm not denying that. It's just that you can make catchy music that is also musically interesting. In fact, that's what I try to do.

Thing is, "interesting" does NOT seem to sell. The average attention span of an American these days is 15 seconds. To keep their interest, you need to have simplicity. It annoys me, but it is so.

This is worse than the Biebs
