So I decided to try to learn to play fast stuff again, and man do I suck, haha. I've got like no chops now, but I guess thats what I get for stopping abruptly. This time I'm going to try to be more reasonable about it though, like actually giving myself time to get better. Last time I was trying to play fast I would maybe take the tempo down to learn a solo, but then I would expect to be able to play it at full speed within like half an hour, which is totally unrealistic.
This could have gone in the guitar forum but I don't really feel like reawakening one of those threads just for one post.

I am trying to be good again too. For me that's just learning a bunch of songs (got a few easy ones down) and a couple of legit, challenging classical pieces because I like them. I'm doing this just to at least a basic repertoire since when asked to play, I can improvise for a while and sound decent (though that needs work too).
The reason I'm not as motivated is because my goal isn't really to be a good guitar player. I'm more interested in being a producer/singer-songwriter (not the boring guitar type), therfore I'd rather spend time working on that. Eventually I'll be able to get a vocal coach for a while and that will tie everything together so I can be a musical genius. In the meantime I'm just polishing everything else up. What type of fast are you talking? Like speed metal, heavy rock, classical, or what?

Like Heavy Metal guitar solo type stuff. My motivation is basically that I re-wrote the lyrics to a lot of my old songs, but then I realized I'll have to learn to play the guitar solos, many of which I could hardly play in the first place before I quit playing them and lost my chops.

I haven't played for a month and a half. I probably won't play for another month and a half. All those skills...all that relearning...

Sam, are you just too busy to play or what?

I just plain suck at the instrument. But hey, I am better than a fair few fellow players I know irl, so there's that ego boost.

I'm in California for another month and a half, until I finish training. When training is over, I move to Dallas, at which point I'll be moving all my stuff from Wisconsin. |
