The instrument market around here is horrible too. No big shops until you reach Leicester or Cambridge, which are at least 40 minute drive away, if not more. Not a big deal really, but unless you have a car, good luck getting there. In the local area there is basically nothing. There's maybe 3 shops, plus another that went under 2 years ago. One of the ones still alive is hella over-priced, while the one I did work experience in - which was good, because it focused on used stuff - had the guy who was keeping it alive pull out, so it had half its stock taken away. I don't know much about the third, but I don't think it's got that great a range.
The used market, though, is unspeakably bad. Marshall MGs. Line 6 Spiders. Cheap £40 acoustics. Squier strats out of starter packs. That's about it really. It's worse for amps than guitars, because you do get the occasional Fender or nice Squier, maybe a Epiphone or Gibson; perhaps an Ibanez or two. Amps though? Just tumbleweed on a dry desert.
