When I learned piano lessons as a small child, the teacher didn't emphasize rhythm. In fact, I had no concept of it until I played drums in high school. However, though, I think it's a shame, cause the lack of emphasis on it is shortchanging students. So anyway, when I taught basic piano, I was harsh on rhythm, and students found it odd - cause their teachers are normally lazy in that aspect.
