the oddest thing is my girlfriend's mom driving me and her to DC and finding out that her mom has a thing for asking alexandria and such.
i can proudly say i never went through that phase
and half the people i hang with at school are still in it
I listened to some bad music, but nothing as bad as AA and such.
I listened to Creed.
Wait, I still do.
I listened to A7X
Wait, I still do
Quick question for anyone that knows theory/keys.
Is it still in key if my chord progression is: E-B-A-Ab or is the Ab off?
The Ab would be what's known as a "non-diatonic" chord. Meaning it's not one of the 7 "safe" chords in the key of Emajor. (Technically, you can never be out of key, although you can switch keys.) Point is, the Ab is perfectly fine.
Wait, so is it off key, or what?

No. The key is Emajor. You didn't change keys or anything by adding an Ab chord. Just because a chord isn't considered "diatonic" (read: safe) doesn't mean it screws up the key.
Think of it as borrowing the Ab from another key. The home chord of your progression (in this case, E because the progression feels at "home" on E) is what dictates the key. All you're doing by bringing in the Ab chord is spicing things up a little. It's like adding hot peppers to a pizza; it makes the pizza interesting. You're doing the same thing here, adding an Ab to your progression to make it interesting.
Make sense?
Oh okay, I might try and tab out my song idea and maybe record a rough snippet of it to see how it sounds.
