Meh.
To be frank, I never was more than a casual fan, and I can't really be bothered if 90% (or whatever) of fans are into hentai. Around here, anyway, most anime fans are huge fans of 1 or 2 shows (usually Bleach or Inuyashu or one of the other shows with lots of episodes) and certainly don't enjoy hentai. Maybe that's bigger in Japan or in the ComicCon-esque circles. I don't know.
It was really a joke, and hentai isn't a huge deal in Japan like the internet makes it out to be. It's got the same target audience as it does in America, which is those weird otaku guys.
This might sound elitist, but I don't really consider people who only watch one or two shows as actual anime fans. It's like someone saying they're a huge metalhead, but the only metal band they listen to is Metallica. They're a fan of the show yes, but anime in general, I'd say no.

Well, good. lol.

Well, that's why I use the term "casual".
hrug:
But I get where you're coming from, and I really would agree. I mean, I tend to stick to certain genres of anime, preferring sci-fi, fantasy, action, & such; but I do watch a fair amount of shows. The guys who love a specific show (and never watch any other shows) are probably best called "fans of X show", not "fans of anime in general", as you say. It'd kind of be like calling yourself a fan of RPG's in general, when the only RPG series you've ever played is Zelda.
The internet really blows the weird shit from Japan out of proportion. They think all the weird shit we see is all cultural norms, and it doesn't help when the otakus like Inst and such think that waifus and lolicon are socially acceptable in Japan.
Them being proud to say they like lolicon is funny for me, because if they say that in Japan, they're literally calling themselves pedophiles, but somehow the anime community outside of Japan just thinks you think anime little girls are cute.

That's understandable, I guess. I mean...it seems to be mostly Westerners who use those terms as "good", and us Westerners don't have the cultural understanding to get that those terms aren't necessarily good in Japan. Also, a lot of it is probably guys like Inst deciding they were going to say "Fuck you" to all the people who call them pedophiles, as if embracing something proudly suddenly makes it ok. (Just ask the pre-Civil Rights racists how it was "ok" to degrade anyone who wasn't White; just saying. And I'm not comparing otakus and racists, btw. It's just a ridiculous example, to make a point.)
Well I wouldn't say they're doing it because they think doing it proudly makes it okay. The meaning in general has changed when it came overseas. In Japan it refers to someone who is attracted to little girls, or women who look like little girls, whereas outside of Japan, it just refers to the genre/paraphernalia.
So people get confused over the meaning of it. So they're used to just knowing it just as the genre, but don't know the actual Japanese meaning. Kind of like how most anime fans you see believe that shonen is a genre, and any show similar to Bleach and Naruto is shonen. While they're not generally wrong, it's just that they'll get confused when you see shows like Love Hina and Lucky Star also labeled as shonen. Then they get pissed when I say "um.. shonen is a target demographic, it's not a genre".
Lately seinen shows are getting more popular, and a majority of them happen to be schoolgirl comedies, so now people think seinen means "schoolgirl comedy", but they don't realize that Ghost in the Shell and Sword Art Online are also seinen shows.
I recently watched The Devil Is A Part-timer. Really funny - would recommend/10

Ah, I see. That makes sense.
I just find if fun with how people are passionate about the hobby, but don't know that much about the hobby at the same time. Or maybe I'm just weird for liking to learn about my hobbies.
Sunday Without God looks interesting.
Really looking forward to Highschool of The Dead's next season. Also, been wanting to watch the live action Death Note movie for a while, going to see if I can borrow it off a friend. Have any of you seen it?
