Gintama is fucking hilarious, it's based around the time the Westerners first moved into Japan (think The Last Samurai) except replace Tom Cruise with aliens.
The problem for you is that the show relies heavily on Japanese humor and pop culture, so a lot of the fansubs leave cultural notes. It gets annoying when you have to pause to read the notes to get the jokes.
I wouldn't recommend that to you.
Well that makes a solid 5 people saying it's great, you're the first one to say it's not for me though, probably because you have no motive to have someone to talk to about it, lol.
Well i'll still check it out because i'm being pressured to, but if i don't like it at least now i have an excuse
I stopped watching it because there's 300 episodes. Outside of that I enjoyed it.
I'm only saying it's not for you because you hate reading subtitles, because you have to concentrate a lot, and they throw in cultural notes on top of that (it gets worse as the series goes on). So I figured it's too hectic for you.
You could read the manga, but imo comedy isn't as funny reading it as it is watching it.
Well i gave it a shot, watched the first 2 episodes. It was... interesting. There where definitely some stuff that are a japan thing i didn't understand, like he was reading a magazin or something and called it 'jump', i'm guessing it's like some tabloid or something
Anyway, it was kinda hard to follow, but i'm guessing since it's only the start it gets clearer later on, plus the whole alien aspect wasn't there yet. It was also a strain on my eyes, so i won't be watching it for long periods of time probably.
I also found a gif from it which is the perfect reaction to weird shit
It gets worse as it goes on.
Jump is the name of the magazine the manga is published in.
Man, I've been watching this weird ass comedy called Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (Goodbye Mr. Despair). It's an absurdist series that's even weird for Japanese standards (impossible!). Studio Shaft is also the only studio that was able to make the already weird manga even weirder.
Here's the basic premise:
"Horribly suicidal homeroom teacher underpins various Japanese social problems by presenting them as Spoof Aesops, and his entire class' names directly indicate their personality, as well as the particular social problem they (hilariously) represent"
Here's the studio's business model for the series:
>have no budget
>very niche following
>season 3 might not happen
>spend thousands of dollars on a one-use opening
>gets third season
If it's weird even for Japanese standards then i'm staying the fuck away from it
I can't even imagine it, it's like trying to imagine a whole new base colour that isn't related in any way to the existing colours we already know
It's a strange combination of surrealism with absurdism. So it ends up being one big mind fuck.
Here's the "casually reveal" scene where they talk about casually revealing important information.
My mind if pretty filled with wat right now.
Don't worry, this makes less sense:
Let's see if you can spot Che Guevera in this scene.
