Ah, that makes sense.
They're definitely a polarizing studio, you basically love them or hate them. A lot of their weirdness is based largely on the source material they're adapting from, and "enhance" it with their odd cinematography. Though there are a couple normal ones where they hold back and animate "normally" for the most part like And Yet the Town Moves and Nisekoi.

One thing that does attract a ton of haters is how they're infamous for enhancing the episodes on the home video releases to where there's some drastic changes. There's various reasons, but one reason is because they're also infamous for not completing a couple episodes before they air (well only 90% complete). Though some people blow the incomplete parts out of proportion, and most of them haven't seen the home video versions.
Yeah, some people love to blow everything out of proportion.
A couple of their shows have that one scene that's very different on the home video release. Though with Bakemonogatari, people heard one scene wasn't fully animated when it aired, but somehow that got translated to all the episodes not being fully animated (don't you love when this happens?).

So throughout the show, they have this weird thing where they show a still frame of a colored screen with some text on it like this, they apparently mean something (some of them also have text that might mean something), but they're just part of the show. In the incomplete scene, the main character is fighting a snake spirit, but if you saw the TV version, they covered that up with those images. If you didn't know any better, you'd just think it's part of the show as well, but then the home video release has that whole scene fully animated.

So as you probably guessed, when word got around, people thought that every time those still frames showed up, that meant "let's cover up an incomplete scene" though anyone that's seen the home video release will tell you that those still frames are just part of the show and pretty much all of them are still there.
That sounds like people make a whole bunch of shit out of nothing.

Keep that in mind when you watch it and think of me when you see them.
I did notice this. But what bugged me was nothing really happened. It ends with the tournament about to start.

Yeah, it bugs me too. I wouldn't exactly call Kirito coming to terms with himself making progress.

Well, I can see why they did that. But that feels like "fluff" to me.

Pretty much.

Though that reminds me of a discussion I had with someone. Basically what some anime fans do when they enjoy something weird and someone else doesn't like it, they say "oh, you just don't understand Japanese culture", though they don't realize that a lot of the weird shit is also considered weird in Japan as well, or, like most Shaft shows, also targeted at a niche audience in Japan.

I saw someone bitch about how the Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise doesn't get great reviews from professional game critics, and fans pull that line on them. Sorry, but a game where they're personifying the console wars with preteen anime girls isn't normal in Japan either.

Just for you Josh.
Now spit
