Tbh I only find that acceptable when you're speaking to other people who really know the language. Like when I'm hanging out with Japanese people, I tend to throw in some Japanese words, as some phrases just make more sense in Japanese. I'm sure Joel probably understands what I'm saying when it comes to French.

Though I don't see a need for it when you're around people who don't speak the language.

I will say knowing another language is kind of interesting when I actually think about it. It also comes in handy in public, as my family use it to badmouth people in public. Have you ever saw someone in public and thought "what the fuck is this bitch wearing?" and was afraid to say it? Well I don't have that problem when I'm with my family.
I didn't say it was acceptable, just that it's understandable (for the first category).

I really wish they would just make second-language education compulsory from a young age already. Then we'd all have skills and I wouldn't feel like a patheitc linguistic freeloadoer (lolololo). But really it's more fair for the non-English speaking world and is a good skill for all people to have in the modern world.

It's also fairly obvious when people are badmouthing you in public anyway. I would appreciate if people would just tell me lol.

That just ruins the fun. Also most people I know are well aware that people know they're saying something about them, but they don't know what.

That's just kind of being a dick though, even if it's whispering in English or something. I'm an empathetic person and get bothered when people do this sort of thing. It happens a lot when I'm with English speaking twats who start saying racist/xenophobic/normal insults/etc. around people who they think only speak Spanish.

With me I can always assume it's one of the following:

I smell like shit.
I look like shit.
My forehead looks like shit.
I forgot to shave me neck (that shit is so annoying).
I'm a pinche joto (lolololololo)
They could kick my ass
They want to kick my ass
I'm ugly as fuck.
etc.

I'm well aware of my flaws. 8)

Yep. Happens all the time.

That's weird. When I had just started school I was in MA and we had French classes.

It really depends on the area, as I went to school in Georgia for 1st and 2nd grade, and they were teaching Spanish, but I went to Mississippi, and they didn't teach anything. Maybe it has to do with how much it affects the local population, and the fact my school in Mississippi was 65% black, so we were instead learning ebonics.

Well your friends are just stupid, that's why it's better to know "obscure" languages like Japanese, so there's a smaller chance they know what we're saying.

In Utah and Arizona you don't learn anything until the eighth grade and then you take two years of a second language (usually Spanish and French). You don't learn anything and basically make a mockery of the languages until you inevitable forget anything you might have learned.

I don't know if you're saying it's weird that they don't do that or that it's weird that I'd want that. If I had to guess, those elementary classes in MA weren't much better (I could be wrong; I know of some really effective Chinese-English schools that are open to all students). In my ideal world, everyone would be bilingual/multilingual so there would be meaningful bilingual education from a young age in a way that doesn't mock the language. A Norwegian UGer described how they learn English there, despite not having too many native English speakers. I'm thinking somewhat similar to that. In communities where there are many native speakers, that's even better.

These people aren't my friends lol. They are either my racist family, people I know but don't like, and in some cases teachers making fun of their students.
Your cohorts sound like dicks. Like, at least do it in another language, not in English. If you want to be a dick, do it right.

There is no right way to be a dick. :flower:

Nearly everyone I know is some sort of racist/xenophoe/homophobe and it's really disappointing. Every now and then I will meet someone who I think is cool and then we have a conversation like this that comes along:

"Black people are scary."
"Are you kidding?"
"Maybe. But really though, fuck Asians."

And then I get a tirade on why Asians are scum. This is from last week, the most recent new person I've met.
And people think the South is racist.
